Wow… Time to De-Stress

April 23rd, 2008 · 10:32 pm · Posted by Vanessa

If your day was anything like mine or Val!’s, it’s definitely time to de-stress. Since Wellness Wednesday is winding down, it’s also an appropriate day for the topic. Follow along with me here – we can do this exercise together. It will work best if you’re in a private place, alone. :)

Tips to relieve stress:

  1. Light a couple of candles and turn the lights down a bit. Place the candles around your room. Mine are vanilla, but any pleasant aroma will do.
  2. Turn on some chill, relaxing music. Cue up last.fm to the Enya Station.
  3. Throw down a mat or blanket on the floor.
  4. Sit cross legged on your mat and close your eyes. Roll your head around on your neck.
  5. Let your head hang loosely toward your chest. Breathe deeply. Remind yourself that this was a beautiful day in the world. Picture the sky outside, picture the breeze gently nudging blades of grass and the leaves on the trees. Picture the beautiful bits of the natural world you witnessed today. Perhaps there are glittering stars out your window now. Envision the heavens above you.
  6. Lock your two index fingers together and stretch your arms out in front of you – picturing all the tension from your day evaporating off your back and shoulders – feel the stress pressing out from your fingers like a ray of light.
  7. Pull your knees to your chest. Grab your feet with opposing hands (right hand around left foot, left hand around right foot) around the balls of your feet/toes so you are holding your feet and knees close together. Arch your back like a Halloween cat. Smile while you do this. Go ahead and rest your head on your knees – eye sockets against knee caps. Hold this position for a little while, paying attention to the breath that slowly flows in and out of your body. Breathe deeply all the while.
  8. Lay back on your mat – continue to breath deeply and calmly. Now feel each inch of your body relaxing. First the muscles in your face, then the muscles in your neck, shoulders arms. You’re aware of your shoulders and back loosening and relaxing. Your abdomen releases all it’s tension as does your lower back. Become aware of the calm stillness of your legs, ankles and feet.
You are a beautiful creature of this world and you are at peace and relaxed.

I hope this helped you guys. It certainly did help me! ;)
